Going organic.....can I do it?

Through some of my research about ear infections I have come across articles and people that have encouraged me to consider going organic. Though some readers may think that I am sitting idly by and watching my daughter suffer, I assure you that I am constantly looking for answers. At this point we have tried almost everything and organic is about the only thing left. Seriously, if someone told me to cover her in honey and let her run naked through the street I would try it. I am desperate for answers! But going organic scares me!!1 It is so.....overwhelming! I am not a cook every night and always from scratch kind of person. I like prepackaged sauce mixes. Convenience foods are, well, convenient. Pepsi and Swiss Cake rolls are my friends. Pizza delivered? Awesome!!! Chinese food? Amazing!! And I can't help but wonder, can I give it all up?

The answer is yes. Yes, I can! For my daughter's health I can do anything. But I won't lie to you, I am not happy about it. Thankfully we have a Trad.er Joe's about 20 minutes from us and their prices are fairly reasonable so shopping there won't be too bad. And we have two local grocery stores with a fairly good selection of organic foods. Now I just need to know what to purchase and how to cook it. We typically eat tacos, spaghetti, pork chops, casseroles, and other preservative laden delicacies. Cooking healthy and organic will be very new to me.

I "know" that eating healthier I will feel better as will hubby. I "know" that even if it does not cure Maddie's ear infections it will still be healthier for her. Hubby and I both struggle with weight and I will not allow Maddie to deal with being overweight. after Maddie's birthday next week we will get started. But until then I have a Pepsi calling my name!!!

  1. I hate that y'all have had to through so much. I know you are trying practically everything so I almost hate to even try to make a suggestion. That said, have you considered gluten free? Praying God will heal her.

  2. I know I don't comment much, as I follow on my phone, but I went to a tasting this past weekend and this post made me think of it! Wildtree, it's a newer home sales of groceries, they have preservative free mixes and other cooking supplies and they were amazing! The prices are very reasonable. You would have to get fruits, veggies, meat at the store, but all the rest they have. It's like the middle of the grocery store. It may be worth checking out. The also have gluten free like the pp suggested :) hope you find answers soon!

  3. Good Luck!! I know it's weird, I have been allergic to fruits since I was 13 ... it started with apples, and now, it's pretty much everything... but recently my kids had some organic apples, and just out of curiosity - I rubbed one on my lip ... no reaction really, so I ate one... then I ate a whole bag... LOL.... I had a slight reaction, but I could eat the whole bag and cure myself with Benedryl.... I was amazed!! I definitely think it's a great thing :)

  4. Stopping by from ICLW so I don't know your whole history, but have you looked into allergies as a possible cause of the ear infections? I had ear infections regularly as a child until I was 12 when a doctor finally realized that I had seasonal allergies and put me on a nasal allergy medicine. I haven't had an ear infection since. I hope you find some kind of answers and solutions for your little girl. Good luck!

  5. You can do it...and, you can enjoy some of those same foods organic style. Making taco seasoning from spices is super easy and preservative free. I have no doubt you are doing everything you can for your daughter and I hope this solution works and gives her some relief.

  6. We're "mostly" organic. I'm fairly strict on the dairy products being organic - except for cheese, because sometimes I just can't find what I want in organic form. Root veggies and fruits with thin skin will get more non-organic matter than an orange. I get my chicken from Costco and don't really bother with buying red meat, but if I do, it's natural grass feed - not necessarily organic. And anything that sits on the shelf it 90% organic.

  7. Not sure about the organic thing...but I also have a lovely baby girl who had 5 ear infections in 4 months...and the last one pretty much lasted a month and three antibiotics until we got tubes. Although going organic and less processed may help her with inflamation a bit...some babies just don't have the anatomy to support the drainage necessary to avoid these infections. You are not a bad mom. It is just anatomical for her...she is prone. BUT...with all that being said...you should not only look into the organic...but look into diets that combat inflamation and excess mucous...sadly..that may mean less or no dairy and gluten etc...but there are options. I really, really hope this will help and she can avoid the adenoid surgery....BUT...if she has to have it...please do not beat yourself up...I know many children who had to have this and their siblings didn't...same good parents...it is just what it is. Good luck.
